Miller curated the J50 box set, which chronologically places the original album alongside 27 previously unreleased recordings, including songwriting tapes made in hotel rooms and at live performances, studio outtakes and rehearsals and audio commentary tracks. It also features exclusive liner notes from Miller and music journalist Anthony DeCurtis.
“The most necessary rule that each child on the market who desires to make a file ought to keep in mind is: When you go into the studio, be able to do the entire efficiency the primary time you do it as a result of that is going to be the very best time you do it,” Miller noted in a press release announcing the set. “The complete factor is to seize the primary efficiency. That’s lots of what The Joker‘s about. It was all first takes, and first takes are at all times higher than good takes.”
Reflecting on the star-making title track, Miller said, “To make a success file, I believed it was finest to have 5 hooks. Not one, not two, not three, not 4, however 5, should you actually needed to ship a success. Like should you take ‘The Joker.’ ‘Some folks name me the Space Cowboy.’ What the hell was that? Then it continues and it will get your consideration once more: the slide guitar, the refrain, the concord, the wolf whistle. It all provides up. All of this stuff are simply components of writing. You study these components, and also you’re at all times taking part in with them.”
