The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) have criticised the club’s determination to enter a multi-year partnership with rewards and engagement platform Socios.
As a part of the deal, Spurs will provide free non-transferable Spurs Fan Tokens to all season ticket holders, offering entry to issues like polls, predictors, quizzes and competitions on the Socios web site, with the chance to achieve factors to unlock rewards and experiences.
Spurs Fan Token will later turn into accessible for non-members to purchase for $2 (£1.64).
Spurs say the Socios partnership may even fund the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Reignite programme, which goals to supply grownup employment alternatives and wholesome way of life help inside the area people.
But the THST launched an announcement shortly after the announcement making clears its “deep concern” concerning the partnership and the way it may allow a “third party provider to monetise fandom”.
The supporters’ group stated: “The club says One Hotspur members and season ticket holders will be provided with one and five free tokens respectively and the arrangement then encourages fans to enter a cryptocurrency ecosystem of which many fans will have little knowledge but will be encouraged to purchase further tokens to ‘win’ things.
“The membership is trusted by followers and we concern many will find yourself in a system they don’t perceive that’s designed to monetise their help and love for the membership.
“It is important there should be no financial or technological barriers to fan engagement yet this relationship potentially creates both. THST expects the club to safeguard our supporters against financial loss but this partnership seemingly does the opposite by exposing fans to potential losses.
“We shall even be asking the membership to substantiate that supporters’ information is not going to be shared with any supplier with out additional session or consent.”
