Do characters in John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) in fact know if they have been assimilated by the Thing? : movies

When I used to be re-watching one in all my favourite sci-fi thrillers The Thing (1982) not too long ago, I used to be struck with the query of whether or not characters who’ve been taken over, imitated by the alien, certainly know they are the alien. It appeared unanswerable, however fascinating to analyze…

There is the one character, Norris, who finally ends up having some kind of pains earlier than collapsing, after which subsequently revealing that he’s the alien. I believed this was fascinating, and led to the form of philosophical query of whether or not the imitation may be so excellent that even the individual won’t know they had been an imitation. Norris seems to be genuinely in ache earlier than he collapses, a human response that might be pointless to mimic, particularly when he isn’t round others.

Perhaps a sign that these assimilated don’t know they are in fact the alien ?
