Warning: SPOILERS forward for The Last of Us season finale.
Although Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have modified a number of issues right here and there, the ending of The Last Of Us has by no means been up for debate. While it‘s a bit tragic and calls Joel’s morality into query, the ending is completely integral to the themes of the story being instructed. Strangely sufficient, unique Last of Us sport creator Neil Druckmann was open to altering the story’s ending if it matches the wants of the present, however fellow TV Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin didn’t even give it a second thought.
During a Last Of Us press convention, each of them spoke about the strategy of writing. Any deviations have been fairly minor. As Mazin put it…
Neil was, I’ll say by no means, I truthfully imply this, I do not suppose he was ever the man who stated, ‘No, we have to do it the way it was in the game.’ I used to be that man, as a result of I’m a fan. And Neil, in the smartest, most beneficiant and versatile approach, was all the time open to the strategy of adaptation. He understood what adaptation meant … But, the ending, there was by no means a query. As a participant, I bought to the finish, why would I ever wish to change that? It’s superior.
Hence, as in the sport, Joel chooses to avoid wasting Ellie at the price of a probably world-changing treatment for the Cordyceps fungus. Since Ellie is naturally immune, the Fireflies have been planning to extract this treatment from Ellie. Unfortunately, the course of would kill her. Joel simply spent the entire course of the sequence studying to like Ellie as a daughter, and since he has nothing left with out her, shedding her would simply be an excessive amount of for him to bear.
