Marlene dreads Sundays, when she and her mother, Paola, spend most of the day on the salon present process the excruciating (and excruciatingly boring) ritual of getting their hair straightened. Frizzy is an intimate mother-daughter drama that sensitively explores the idea of so-called “good hair,” a manifestation of racist magnificence requirements, in addition to how such internalized anti-Blackness will get handed down by generations.
