There’s no denying the impression Nirvana’s had on each their legions of followers and their rock friends and proteges. During his current look on the Conan O’ Brien Needs a Friend podcast, as an illustration, drummer/Foo Fighters mastermind Dave Grohl advised that the enduring trio’s third and closing LP – 1993’s In Utero – seemingly rubbed off on each Weezer’s Pinkerton and Bush’s Razorblade Suitcase.
Grohl – alongside bassist Krist Novoselic and producer Steve Albini – spoke with O’Brien a couple of ton of issues associated to the thirtieth anniversary of In Utero (reminiscent of being rich and punk, dwelling in “squalor” pre-Nirvana and coping with sudden fame). Near the top of their chat, Albini feedback on “the public perception” that “the record label insisted that they change things and Nirvana gave in on some stuff.” In actuality, he says, Nirvana “resolve[d] these things on their own,” which means that “the record that made it into the stores is the record that Nirvana wanted everybody to hear.”
That evaluation prompted Grohl so as to add his personal perspective concerning the document’s bigger affect on rock music: “The funny thing is that after In Utero, it became kind of a predictable move for other bands that were in similar situations,” together with Weezer and Bush.
Specifically, Grohl continues:
An unknown band . . . will get a document deal [and] goes into the studio . . . with a producer and so they make an album . . . and it does very well after which they really feel type of bizarre about it as a result of possibly it didn’t sound the best way they needed it to sound . . . after which they go in to make their second document and so they’re like, “Well, now this is what we really sound like.”
So, Weezer did it with their album ‘Pinkerton,’ which is a fucking superb document. The first Weezer document [1994’s ‘Weezer’] has a bunch of hits and so they develop into actually common. Then they go in to make their second document . . . . and it’s type of like their ‘In Utero.’
Another band [is] Bush. Bush is a band that will get actually common and has this produced document [1994’s ‘Sixteen Stone’]. Then, they determine, “No, wait, fuck that. Now that we’re big, we get to do the thing that we really want to do, so we’re going to go in and make an album that’s raw [in] the way it sounds [1996’s ‘Razorblade Suitcase’].
Coincidentally, Razorblade Suitcase was also produced by Albini, so that might explain the connection even more.
To be fair, Grohl also states: “I don’t know if it was something that was happening before – I’m sure it happened a million times before In Utero.” Yet, he expounds:
But, for those who got here from the place that we got here from – being within the storage and being within the van and start within the golf equipment and stuff like that – I feel possibly if a band felt uncomfortable with their instant rise to fame, that’s the knee-jerk response is to go in and make an album the place they’re like, “No, no, wait. This is what we sound like.”

He makes a very good level, proper? Regardless of if sure bands had that mentality pre-In Utero, it’s simple to see how Nirvana’s swan music at the least made such daring strikes extra attractive.
