Over the weekend, at Baltimore Comic Con, the 2022 Ringo Award Winners had been introduced. Big winners over the weekend had been Harold Schechter and Eric Powell‘s graphic novel Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? (Albatross Funnybooks), with three awards; and James Tynion IV, Werner Dell’Edera, andMiquel Muerto’s ongoing collection Something is Killing the Children (BOOM!), with two awards.
Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?, a graphic novel exploring the origins of infamous Fifties serial killer and physique snatcher Ed Gein, was a three-time winner on the 2022 Ringo Awards – receiving prizes for Best Original Graphic Novel, Best Non-Fiction Comic Work, and Best Presentation in Design.
Something is Killing the Children, printed by BOOM! Studios, started serialisation in 2019. The collection obtained two Ringo awards – for Best Series and Best Single Issue or Story (#20). Co-creator James Tynion IV additionally obtained a 2022 Ringo Award for Best Writer.
In the webcomic class Rachel Smythe’s standard ongoing Webtoon collection Lore Olympus as soon as extra added an extra award to its shelf.
Baltimore Comic Con and Ringo Awards consultant Randy Tischler indicated the scope and vibrancy of the American comedian e book trade’s output from the final 12 months in his opening remarks,
“In the calendar year 2021 – the eligibility period for this year’s Ringo Awards – Diamond Comic Distributors sent out 18,592 comics, original graphic novels, and trade paperbacks. That’s a lot of comics. It doesn’t include publishers using alternate distribution channels, self-publishers, the growing field of crowd-funders, or the universe of webcomics.”
Adding:
“Folks, the next time you are wondering what you should pick up to read, pull up the final ballot, throw a dart, and head to your local comic shop.”
The skilled jury on the 2022 Ringo Awards had been Jim Calafiore, Carla Speed McNeil, Jarrett Melendez, Joe Murray, and Quiana Whitted. The jury prize winner, the Mike Wieringo Spirit Award, went to Chris Samnee, Laura Samnee, and Matt Wilson‘s Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters (Oni Press).
Nominees for the Ringo Awards are chosen by a mixture of skilled jury choice and not less than two further locations per class derived from fan voting. Only trade professionals are eligible to vote within the closing poll to pick out Ringo Award winners.
