Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is more than likely going to find yourself directing the sequel to his epic Godzilla film and when he does, he’s planning to embrace one other Kaiju for Godzilla to battle.
The filmmaker mentioned in a earlier interview: “If I were to direct the next Godzilla movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one. There have been two standalone Godzilla films in a row now, so perhaps the next one will need to feature a villain monster.”
Some of Godzilla’s past foes include King Ghidorah, Destroyah, Gigan, and more. When Yamazaki makes this Kaiju vs. Kaiju movie he wants to do something Legendary Entertainment hasn’t been able to pull off… make an actual good Kaiju vs. Kaiju movie with a strong human element to it.
During an interview with Empire, the filmmaker shared: “I don’t know if anybody has achieved a extra severe tone of kaiju vs kaiju with human drama, that problem, is one thing I would love to discover.”
He went on to add, “When you’ve got films that function [kaiju battles], I feel it’s extremely straightforward to put the highlight and the digicam on this huge spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama part.”
He’s absolutely right, and I would love for him to actually showcase his storytelling and directing skills and continue to prove to Hollywood that you can make an epic genre film with all the spectacle and still manage to tell a great story. Hollywood has had a long struggle with that.
It’s going to be awhile before that Godzilla Minus One sequel gets made, though. The director said: “I can inform you [the Minus One sequel’s] not going to be my subsequent movie. I’ve already received my subsequent movie in improvement that I’m engaged on however will or not it’s the one after that? That stays to be seen.”
While we wait, we can all look forward to seeing what Yamazaki does next.
