Greg Weisman Recalls Pitching Gargoyles 3 Times To Disney Ahead of FOC

The new Gargoyles comedian guide written by the present creator Greg Weisman and printed by way of Dynamite Entertainment, is up for Final Order Cut-Off this weekend. So retailers are being inspired to up their orders whereas they nonetheless can, and readers are being urged to let their comedian guide store know that they want a duplicate. To that finish, Bleeding Cool has a letter from Greg Weisman to Gargoyles‘ followers, which he’s sharing with us to share with you, the way it all started at Disney.

Hey there followers, Allow me to take you on a bit of journey…

Back in 1991, my staff and I at Walt Disney Television Animation, started growing a bit of present known as GARGOYLES.  Originally impressed by Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, it began life as a comedy-adventure collection about cute little multi-colored gargoyles (with names like Amp, Coco, Lassie and Ralph), who awakened within the late twentieth Century to battle a comic book villain (within the Captain Hook/Duke Igthorn-mode) named Xavier and his evil gargoyle henchwoman Demona.  We have been extraordinarily captivated with this present and pitched it to Michael Eisner, Chairman of the Walt Disney Company.

He handed.

But we nonetheless thought there was one thing within the notion, so we went again to the drafting board.  We created the character of Goliath to guide the Gargoyle Clan and put the complete GARGOYLES improvement by way of the prism of who Goliath was, popping out the opposite facet with, basically, the tv collection that ended up airing on stations throughout the U.S. and elsewhere.  We have been extraordinarily captivated with this new model of the present – arising with thought after thought – and pitched it all to Eisner.

He handed.

But by this time, quite a bit of people at Disney thought we is likely to be onto one thing.  So, we went again to the drafting board for a 3rd time, to determine what GARGOYLES was lacking.  Ultimately, I made a decision it was lacking nothing.  The downside wasn’t the present; it was the pitch.  We had thrown all the things and the kitchen sink into it.  We needed to simplify, carry it again to the core concepts.  We tossed quite a bit of stuff out of the pitch that did finally get into the present.  (The Pack?  Out.  The Mutates?  Out.  Etc.)  And we centered all the things on the core relationship between Goliath, and his human pal, Detective Elisa Maza.  One final time, we pitched the collection to Eisner – although to be sincere, I kinda thought he’d toss me out of the boardroom for pitching it but once more.

But this time, he purchased it.

With Eisner’s backing, we made two seasons of GARGOYLES for tv syndication.  And years later, I wrote an eighteen subject “Season Three” for Slave Labor Graphics.  But GARGOYLES is my child, and I’ve been determined to get again to the collection and its giant and wonderous forged of characters for over a decade now – as have our extraordinarily loyal followers, who’ve by no means allowed the present to fall out of the zeitgeist.  Now – because of Disney, Dynamite, Nate Cosby and George Kambadais – we’re again for “Season Four” with Goliath, Elisa, Demona, Xanatos, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, Bronx, Angela, Coldstone, Coldfire, Owen, Fox, Alexander, the Pack, the Mutates, the Clones, and new or newer characters like Katana, Gnash, Fu-Dog, Egwardo and Dino Dracon.  I am unable to look forward to each previous followers and new readers to see these tales and adventures, to renew this lengthy and fantastic journey…
