James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy shouldn’t be taking place.
That’s as a result of the film — which is formally in manufacturing as of at the moment, February 29 — now has a brand new title. From now on, it’s simply Superman.
Gunn posted a photograph to his Instagram account revealing the information, writing “overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.”
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy,” he added. “ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.”

Gunn’s put up features a close-up of the brand new Superman defend, which resembles the gained worn by the Man of Steel within the ’90s comedian sequence Kingdom Come, with that comedian’s black and crimson coloration scheme subbed out for the character’s extra conventional yellow and crimson.
In that sequence, set in a darkish alternate future, a brand new technology of heroes proves ill-equipped to guard the world, resulting in the older members of the Justice League — together with Superman — to return from retirement to confront them. Although Kingdom Come has by no means been tailored to a movie, the model of Superman performed by Brandon Routh within the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover wore a model of that very same Superman uniform. (Routh, in fact, beforehand performed the Man of Steel in 2006’s Superman Returns.)
Superman (not Superman: Legacy) is at the moment scheduled to open in theaters on July 11, 2025. It is supposed to be the primary movie in a model new DC Comics cinematic universe, overseen by Gunn.
