The new movie has us going again to rewatch the unique film that impressed it, and likewise has us rewatching outdated clips from the Hocus Pocus press tour.
One clip that is resurfaced just lately (because of TikToker @wob25) is from a 1993 Today Show interview with Kathy Najimy, and it is as fascinating as it’s related for right this moment’s world.
In the interview, Savanah Guthrie asks Kathy about her preliminary hesitation in taking over the function of Mary Sanderson, and Kathy stated she initially had issues concerning the movie’s script.
Kathy explains that she was afraid to offend actual witches, saying, “I thought, ‘This is really perpetuating a stereotype about an evil, ugly witch.’ And I know there are groups of really strong women who sort of bond together and are very spiritual and powerful. And I didn’t want to be part of perpetuating that myth.”
“At the risk of having America roll their eyes,” She stated, “I just feel supportive of all groups. You know, wether they’re women’s groups, or gay groups, or racial groups. And I know there are groups of witches out there.”
While she was deciding if she was going to take the function or not, she seemed to others for his or her enter. “I talked to Kenny Ortega, the director… I wrote letters to the producers… and I talked to Gloria Steinem about it… because she’s the goddess of the world and knows everything.”
And what Gloria Steinem informed Kathy was really fascinating!
“The interesting thing was that originally some of the women who were said to be witches were healthcare workers and midwives.”
And tying it on to a really giant plot level of Hocus Pocus itself, she explains, “So that’s where the notion of baby eating came [from], because they would perform abortions sometimes. And so the women would go in pregnant and come out not.”
It’s unimaginable that this clip is nearly 30 years outdated, as a result of it nonetheless feels extremely related for our tradition the place reproductive rights stay on the forefront of dialog, and healthcare employees are nonetheless being demonized by some for performing these companies.
But it simply proves that Kathy Najimy has at all times exhibited iconic conduct, and we love her for utilizing her platform to face up for others.
