At the peak of the pandemic, In the Heights was one of many first majors movies to hit theaters in a wholly new panorama. Because movie-goers had but to return to theaters in droves, the movie suffered in an enormous manner at the field workplace, regardless of near-universal acclaim. The image served as the massive breakout for rising star Melissa Barrera, who now says she took the film’s failure at the field workplace to coronary heart.
“At the time, I did take it very personally,” Barrera instructed NME in a current chat. “I don’t anymore. But it was my first big movie, everybody was saying it was going to be this huge hit, and it meant a lot to have a big studio movie with an all-people-of-colour cast.
Barrera made sure to point out the film was released during a time when Warner Bros. was releasing every filming in theaters and on streaming at the same exact time.
“The opinions have been nice, and the film was improbable – I’m pleased with it,” she added. “But then it did not do properly due to COVID and it was launched concurrently on HBO Max when folks weren’t going to theatres. There have been so many issues that have been out of my management.”
Since then, Barrera added she no longer pays attention to that type of stuff. At the very least, she said, she’s thankful for the learning opportunities the musical gave her.
“It wasn’t a good time. But I would not change it as a result of it taught me quite a bit in regards to the business. If it had come out and turn out to be this enormous hit and I had skyrocketed and turn out to be a world famous person, I do not know if I’d perceive the business so properly,” Barrera concluded.
“There are so many issues that I’ve no energy over, so I realized the dear lesson that I can not let that stain or dampen my expertise of constructing a movie. The solely factor that issues is whether or not I’ve had fun and I’m pleased with what I’ve made, and whether or not I’ve made lasting relationships out of it.”
In the Heights is now streaming on Max.
