Rappers say the darnedest issues of their songs. Some of their lyrics are so complicated that followers do not know what they’re rapping about.
For instance, on Rich Gang’s 2013 monitor “Lifestyle,” Young Thug raps, “Nelivliflikabegittldisondbeggining.” Huh, what? After cautious translation, Thugger truly says: “N***a livin’ life like a beginner and this is only beginnin’.”
Another rapper generally identified for his complicated lyrics is Ghostface Killah. The Wu-Tang Clan member’s 2000 tune “Nutmeg” is totally indecipherable. In one verse, Ghostdini spits, “Scientific, my hand kissed it/Robotic, let’s think optimistic/You probably missed it, watch me Dolly d**k it/Scotty Wotty copper tipped me, big microphone hippie.”
What does that even imply?
Then, we’ve Jay-Z. In one of many only a few instances Hov’s masterful bars could not be interpreted clearly and concisely, followers of the Brooklyn billionaire have been famously confused for years over one punchline specifically from Jay’s 2001 opus, The Blueprint. In the fourth verse of “U Don’t Know,” does Jay-Z say “whale” or “well?”
“I sell ice in the winter, I sell fire in Hell,” Jigga raps. “I’m a hustler, baby, I’ll sell water to a whale [well]/I was born to get cake, move on and switch states/Cop the coupe with the roof gone and switch plates.”
Aside from Pusha T, who clearly believes Jay-Z makes use of the phrase “whale,” as is clear by a line Push spits in his 2022 Arby’s-sponsored diss monitor aimed toward McDonald’s, Hov’s notoriously debatable punchline has been so extensively argued over that Jay-Z himself felt the necessity to clarify the which means of the “U Don’t Know” lyric to the tune’s producer, Just Blaze. Apparently, the Roc Nation boss deliberately left the “whale” or “well” rhyme open for interpretation.
“Haaaa!!! Well/whale,” Jay-Z texted Just Blaze based on journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy through Okayplayer. “It’s never a coincidence when these things happen. I try to make things work on multiple levels every time I sit down to create. It keeps me engaged.”
So with that, XXL determined to compile an inventory of rappers who’ve delivered some complicated lyrics of their songs that made followers scratch their heads. Check them out under.
