Robin Thicke has revealed his shocking musical connection to some of the influential Hip Hop artists of his era, Lil Wayne.
During a latest episode of Drink Champs, the “Blurred Lines” crooner touched on his relationship with Hip Hop, recalling the second he believed the Young Money government was the following huge factor.
“We were genuine fans of each other before we blew,” Thicke instructed hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN. “Like, once I heard ‘Go DJ’- I imply, you recognize, he was already blowing up. But once I heard ‘Go DJ,’ I used to be like, ‘This is the next biggest artist, period.’”
“I told Andre Harrell, and he was like, ‘You think so?’” Thicke continued. “I was like, ‘Trust me, Dre, this is the one.’ So, coincidentally, he just reached out to me. The first song on my debut album A Beautiful World– which it’s the 20th anniversary of- he heard this song called ‘Oh Shooter’ on my debut album. He just hit me up out of nowhere and was like ‘Yo, I love this record. Can you send me the tracks? Do you mind if I do something with it?’” And from that, the remix — featured on Tha Carter II — was born.
“The first time that Lil Wayne ever did The Tonight Show– and the first time I ever did The Tonight Show– we did it together,” he added. “The first time either one of us performed at the Grammys, we performed together. So him and I have a real history together.”
Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke have collaborated a number of occasions, together with “Tie My Hands,” “Pretty Lil’ Heart,” and the aforementioned “Shooter.”
Elsewhere within the interview, the singer-songwriter, 46, revealed how performing a dwell rendition of his smash 2007 hit, “Lost Without U,” for Pharrell and Jimmy Iovine resulted in inking a cope with Star Trak Entertainment.
According to Thicke, “I go in and I didn’t even record the vocals yet, so I sing ‘Lost Without U’ live in Jimmy Iovine’s for Pharrell the first time he hears it. Obviously, I was signed with Star Trak the next day and ever since then, Pharrell has done nothing but bless me with his genius.”
