The Economist compiled a chart of the runtimes of movies going back to the Nineteen Thirties. Perhaps not surprisingly, the trend is toward longer movies overall but especially so with more popular movies.

• Studios need to squeeze the most out of their expensive mental property
• Long movies can imply forgoing two showings per night time, which hurts ticket gross sales and income
• Another rationalization for longer movies has to do with administrators’ rising clout

In the chart, the black line is for all movies whereas the crimson line is for “popular” movies as outlined by the quantity of IMDB scores.
