The Nightmare Romance of Harry Anderson’s Love Journal #10, at Auction

Harry Anderson is likely to be finest remembered for his Pre-Code Horror Marvel/Atlas covers like Astonishing #32, however his Love Journal #10 is a stand-out.

Harry Anderson (1911-1972) was a prolific and underappreciated comedian e book artist working from 1939 to 1955.  He started his profession as a ghost artist for the newspaper cartoon Robin Hood and Company for the Toronto Telegram.  In comics, he labored a variety of publishers, early on through the Binder, Chesler, and Funnies Inc studios and later immediately for the publishers.  He did promotional comics comparable to March to Market, the Story of Meat for distributor Swift & Company, and Adventures into the Past for General Electric.  In the heroic style, he labored on Dynamo for Lev Gleason, The Flag for Ace Magazines, The Conqueror for Hillman, and T-Man for Quality amongst many others.  This was all strong work, however evidently Anderson actually got here into his personal when he was requested to attract one thing bizarre or uncommon.   His Pre-Code Horror work for Marvel/Atlas consists of some of the writer’s most memorable covers of that period, together with the werewolf cowl of Astonishing #32 and the zombie cowl of Mystery Tales #19.

His penchant for drawing the bizarre and weird appears to have served Harry Anderson nicely for his best-known romance cowl on Love Journal #10.  This challenge has caught hearth on amongst collectors not too long ago as a result of of its exceedingly bizarre cowl by Anderson for the lead story Branded on this debut challenge of the title.  While I haven’t got entry to the inside story that impressed this splendidly unusual cowl, it actually seems to be a psychological interpretation of the nightmarish affect of romantic or sexual gossip.

All this has served to make Love Journal #10 one of the most well liked romance comics of the previous few years, with a CGC 6.5 copy reaching $6600 in late 2022.  This CGC 5.5 copy is now up for public sale and has seen spirited bidding thus far within the 2024 February 29 – March 1 Golden Age Romance Featuring Fox Comics & Comic Art Showcase Auction #40258.
