Writer and director Barry Jay commented on the themes of the film and his private relation to them.
“I disagree,” says Jay. “Absence doesn’t all the time make the guts develop fonder. Sometimes it provides you the time and distance to achieve the readability to see how badly you have been mistreated and the braveness to lastly do one thing about it. That was me – I moved out of an abusive family after I was 20 years previous. I had been abused till after I used to be a senior in highschool. Severely underweight, shut down, feared everybody and all the things and with good motive. Sobriety was a present that helped me heal by means of all of that, a day at a time and that’s the inspiration for The Way Out.
My hope is to ship a message to the abuser and the abused. To the abuser, I hope to indicate the ripple impact of their heinous actions, and the way it can boomerang again to them, rightfully destroying their lives. To the abused, I hope to indicate there may be hope, hope for higher days, skill to seek out the vanity and power to create boundaries, how forgiveness could be the factor that helps you lastly drop the rock so you’ll be able to create a greater new and wholesome life.”
The Way Out stars Emmy winner Mike Manning, Penny Dreadful’s Jonny Beauchamp, Ashleigh Murray, and Sherri Shepherd.
