A new trailer for Spain’s International Oscar choose, Carla Simón’s “Alcarrás” introduces us to a household of peach farmers who lead an idyllic life, the outdated and the younger all working the land below an unfailing Catalonian solar. The pastoral serenity of verdant fields and bountiful orchards is disrupted when a development crane all of the sudden seems on the property: “There’s a crane on a reservoir!” a baby declares, signalling what would change into a battle for the household’s livelihood.
The Solé household’s future is upended when the farm’s landowner dies and their inheritor refuses to honor a verbal pact made amid the Spanish Civil War. The spot sees the household harvesting their ultimate crop of peaches and struggling to face the fact of eviction. “If you’d signed a piece of paper, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” one member of the family reprimands the aged patriarch.
What ensues is a contest between the Solé household, which has cultivated and relied on the land for generations, and the set up of photo voltaic panels on the agricultural plot. “I’m a farmer, not a solar panel operator,” one Solé insists as he takes down a panel from the aspect of a home.
Featuring first-time actors in its ensemble solid, “Alcarrás” made its world premiere on the Berlinale, the place took residence the fest’s high prize, the Golden Bear.
