The case of Adnan Syed, whom you might know as the topic of podcast Serial‘s 2014 season, has taken an enormous flip.
If you want a refresher, the then 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with the primary diploma homicide of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999. Law enforcement on the time suspected Adnan strangled the 18-year-old lady to demise and buried her physique in a clandestine grave in Leakin Park. Police theorized the previous honors scholar at Woodlawn High School didn’t take it nicely and finally killed her. His first trial in 1999 was a mistrial, however in 2000 he was discovered responsible and sentenced to life in jail plus 30 years — a sentence which he has been serving for the previous 23 years.

Now prosecutors are saying they not think about the conviction. Yeah, over 2 many years later!
As of final Wednesday, Becky Feldman of the Maryland Chief Attorney’s Office Sentencing Review Unit wrote in a movement there was extra proof and extra suspects which ought to have been pursued:
“The State’s Brady violations robbed the Defendant of information that would have bolstered his investigation and argument that someone else was responsible for the victim’s death.”
The movement named two “alternative” suspects who could also be responsible of the crime. One of which threatened the sufferer prior to now, saying he would kill her. Another has even been described as a “serial rapist”…
Wow, if the proof was — nicely, evident — why wasn’t it pursued again then? Well, apparently, the state didn’t disclose these various suspects to the protection. Adnan’s lawyer’s couldn’t argue what they didn’t learn about! Completely unfair, and fairly truthfully, despicable. This is meant to be the justice system we’re speaking about. SOCIETY. Not some sport of chess for prosecutors.
In a press release final week, Syed’s lawyer mentioned he was “grateful” for his day in court docket:
“Given the stunning lack of reliable evidence implicating Mr. Syed, coupled with increasing evidence pointing to other suspects, this unjust conviction cannot stand. Mr. Syed is grateful that this information has finally seen the light of day and looks forward to his day in court.”
The Baltimore State Attorney’s Office says they’re unsure if he’s harmless, however they do imagine the conviction wasn’t dealt with correctly. And, as of Monday, Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn has overturned his conviction. He walked down the steps to cheers and onlookers shouting for his justice.
But it doesn’t imply Syed is totally off the hook but, although his shackles had been eliminated…
Judge Phinn has ordered him to put on a GPS monitor whereas the BSAO decides in the event that they’re going to formally drop his expenses of his ex-girlfriend’s demise or retry him. They have 30 days to make the choice.
As for now, although, Adnan is awaiting their alternative whereas spending time along with his household — who wept and embraced him when the decide declared the ruling.
Wow, if he’s declared harmless, then he’s sat in jail since he was 17 for nothing…
We’ll remember to hold you up to date on this case because it continues to develop. What do U take into consideration his overturning, Perezcious readers? Let us know within the feedback (under).
